FOR the second consecutive day, the gates of Alutrint’s Aluminium Smelter Complex construction site at Union Estate in La Brea were blocked yesterday by angry residents who demanded job opportunites on the project.

The protesting residents alleged that Chinese labourers were being hired for the project over the unemployed locals.

A woman complained that she saw foreigners working on the construction site of the smelter plant.

The fish killed are growing with every wave that touches the beach.

As of last night, however, no one could say what was killing the fish - mostly sardines. It began happening last Thursday.

Contacted yesterday, the Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA) said it had no official report on the dead fish incident. The Environmental Management Association's (EMA) Corporate Communications Manager Nyantara Gayah-Hassan said the authority had also not received any complaints.

I had the opportunity to visit the shores of Manzanilla on two occasions for the past week to view the beautiful turtles trying to lay their eggs.

Unfortunately not many turtles could rest comfortably and lay their eggs because of the disturbance of onlookers flashing lights, speaking loudly on their cell phones and taking pictures despite warnings from some onlookers.
