As La Brea residents continue to insist that they should be given first priority to jobs on the multimillion-dollar Alutrint aluminium smelter plant, at least one resident has shown that he intends to go to any length to be hired. According to sources, the man, said to be his 30s, attempted to defraud company officials, earlier this month, when he was asked to bring a vial containing urine to be tested, to ensure that he was drug free.
Sources said the man brought a vial containing his wife’s urine instead. “It is just unbelievable people are going to get jobs on this plant, and when they are not hired they are claiming that they are being left out. “They would go to any length to get hired.” the source said. The source added that when the urine test was conducted, it showed that the person was one-and-a-half months pregnant.
“No one believed that people would go this far. I do not know what he was thinking when he attempted to defraud the company,” the source said. The source said when the man was told that he had passed the drug test he smiled. However, he was quickly told, “You are one-and-a-half months pregnant.” The source said even members in the community were shocked over the action of the man and began poking fun at him.
Member of Parliament for the area, Fitzgerald Jeffery, said yesterday the community was battling with a drug problem. “We have a drug problem, but I am working assiduously with the youths to ensure that they keep clean.” Alutrint’s communication specialist Josieann Richards could not be reached for comment.
