Earth Hour 2009

What began as a campaign to get Sydneysiders to turn their lights off, has grown to become one of the world’s biggest climate change initiatives. In 2009, at 8.30pm on March 28, people around the world will turn their lights off for one hour – Earth Hour. We’re aiming to reach one billion people, more than 1000 cities, all joining together in a global effort to show that its possible to take action on global warming.

Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia with 2.2 million homes and businesses turning their lights off for one hour. Only a year later and this event had become a global sustainability movement with up to 50 million people across 35 countries participating. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square, all stood in darkness, as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour.

Earth Hour 2009 is a global call to action to every individual, every business and every community. A call to stand up, to take responsibility and to get involved in working towards a sustainable future. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Europe to The Americas will stand in darkness. People across the world will turn off their lights and join together in creating the vital conversation about the future of our precious planet. Over 64 countries and territories are participating in Earth Hour 2009. This number grows every day as people realise how such a simple act, can have such a profound result in affecting change. Earth Hour is a message of hope and a message of action. Everyone can make a difference. Earth Hour, run by WWF, the conservation organization, is a global climate change initiative which calls on individuals and businesses around the world, to turn off their lights for one hour on Saturday March 28 2009 between 8:30pm and 9:30pm. The aim of the campaign is to express that individual action on a mass scale can help change our planet for the better. The event itself will clearly demonstrate in participating cities, the connection between energy usage and climate change, showing that we as broader community can address the biggest threat our planet has ever faced. I'm all for these expressions of environmental responsibility and communal unity. However, Im just cautious as to the security aspect of this move for our country.
It may have worked in other cities where police man-power, public unity and the ability of the general population to obey the laws of their lands isn't an issue. But Trinidadians have shown themselves to be ununified when it comes to the betterment of society. They have shown themselves to be law breakers on several levels great and small. I just see all hell breaking loose in the self proposed blackouts. I understand that it is meant to foster unity and an awareness of the dire situation of the planet.
Hopefully my fears, concerns and observations are not well founded and I'm very wrong.

Non-the-less I will participate.

I understand your concerns, and I share them as well. Imagine the chaos if all of Port of Spain was in darkness??

But not all the lights need to be turned off. How often do we drive by the twin towers at say midnight, and almost every floor has lights turned on. I find it hard to believe that many people are working that late all the time in those buildings.

Companies should leave lights on for security purposes, but i'm sure most of those lights can be turned off or at least dimmed. I'll be turning off all the lights in my home, but there are security dusk to dawn lights outside that i have no control over that will be left on.

when i participated last year, i actually went the whole day with using as little electricity as possible. showered in natural light, no tv, radio, fan, nothing. it was actually quite a fun day!

Monique, I want to thank you for putting all my fears and negative thoughts into perspective regarding this. Im going to find a way to get the message about this event out to as many Trinbagonians as I can. Hopefully my managers allow me to put it out on one of my broadcasts. I'll let you know how it goes.

P.S. love the film on EH 2008 - 2009. Brought me to tears.
