Volunteers needed!
Note: Forestry Division Monkey and Bird counts have been postponed until further notice. This is due to poor weather conditions at this time which may increase the risk of injury. And off course, safety of volunteers is of utmost importance. The Forestry Division apologises for any inconvenience caused.
The Forestry Division would appreciate assistance with the following conservation projects:
Manzanilla Turtle Patrols (May 20th - Aug 27th 2011)
Nariva Swamp Monkey counts
Nariva Swamp Bird counts
starting May 20th and continuing throughout the year (except for turtle patrols) based on your availability.
This is an opportunity for you to learn more about our biodiversity (so don’t worry if you can’t tell the difference yet between a smooth billed ani and a blackbird) and contribute to biodiversity conservation in Trinidad and Tobago . The information that we help to collect will be used locally and internationally to determine our current species diversity, how large the populations are here, what can be done to stabilize the local populations and lots more.
Assessors will meet Mr. Boodoo or his Forestry Representative at Manzanilla Beach breakaway for 07:30 hours.
Bird counts will continue until about midday. In the future, counts may take place on evenings as well.
Please dress comfortably (cotton t-shirt, track pants, hat and covered shoes (sneakers or boots recommended).
Bring along enough water, food and any medicines you may need (insect repellant recommended).
NO ALCOHOL or ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES ARE ALLOWED DURING POPULATION COUNTS.
PLEASE DO NOT BRING ILLEGAL WEAPONS ON POPULATION COUNTS.
You may want to walk with an extra change of clothes and raincoat/ extra large garbage bag in the event of rain.
You may want to walk with a pencil, paper, clipboard, pair of binoculars, guidebook (e.g. ffrench) to record counts of different species.
You are responsible for your transport to and from Nariva Swamp.
THIS IS AN ECO-VOLUNTEER PROJECT. The Forestry Division shall not be held responsible for any injury sustained to any persons during population counts. However first aid services shall be available should they be required.
For further information and to register for this project, please contact Marianne S. Hosein (752-1926/ marihosein@yahoo.com).
Thank you for your commitment to biodiversity conservation in Trinidad & Tobago.
Together WE CAN make the difference we seek !
